The death of former President Jimmy Carter is expected to bring all of the pomp and circumstance of a funeral befitting a world leader.

Biden schedules state funeral to be held Jan. 9

Update 8:14 a.m. ET, Dec. 30: President Joe Biden has scheduled a state funeral in Washington for former President Jimmy Carter on Jan. 9, The Associated Press reported. Biden also declared Jan. 9 as a National Day of Mourning across the U.S. and ordered U.S. flags to fly at half-staff for 30 days from Sunday.

The Carter Center, which has released preliminary plans, said that there will be public observances in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. before Carter will be interred privately in Plains, Georgia.

The final arrangements including all of the public events and motorcade routes are pending but once finalized they will be released by the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region.

The Carter Center also created an online condolence book and has “print and visual biographical materials commemorating his life” on the website it launched - jimmycartertribute.org.
