NEW YORK — Singer, songwriter and philanthropist Dolly Parton has been selected to receive the 2022 Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy.
According to the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy website, the award was created “to inspire a culture of giving by honoring innovative philanthropists and by elevating the importance and relevance of philanthropic contributions to our society.”

Parton told The Associated Press that she was honored to receive the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy:
I’ve always believed that if you are in a position to help, you should help, and I truly hope that I can be an inspiration for others to lift up those around them. Whether through my Imagination Library or giving to COVID-19 research, I try to support things that have a special meaning for me. I hope everyone can find something they’re passionate about supporting and do what they can to help make this world a better place.

The award is usually awarded every two years. It was not issued in 2021 due to the pandemic.
Lyda Hill, Manu Chandaria and Lynn and Stacy Schusterman will receive the award along with Parton at a private New York ceremony on Oct. 13.
In addition to a bronze medal, each recipient receives a bust of Andrew Carnegie. Medalists are nominated by the family of Carnegie institutions every two years.
The award was created at the centennial observance of Andrew Carnegie’s official career as a philanthropist, according to the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy website.
Over 65 philanthropists have been honored with the medal.
